60 years—and still in the family.
In 1955, George Webb founded Webb Audio Visual. He began by warehousing equipment in the garage of his family home. All his children spent part of their time stuffing envelopes, working in the warehouse or making deliveries. Today, 60 years later, the company still remains a family-owned business with staff that now includes 3rd generation family members.
In the early years, the comWeb-Audio-Discover-Stagepany primarily sold equipment to the Utah public school system. As Salt Lake became a destination city for events and conventions the company decided to grow with that trend. In addition to sales, they started offering rental equipment to hotels and later to the Salt Palace. Expanding into the rental business was a huge decision on Webb Audio Visual’s part but one that helped company growth.
n 1979, brothers Jim and Steve Webb bought the company from their father. Steve has become a leader in the industry with over 40 years in the business. In 2001, Scott Webb, a Landscape Architect, sold a successful business in Maryland, moved back to Utah, and purchased his brother Jim’s interest in the company. Scott’s design ability and Steve’s business savvy have been the right mix for phenomenal growth over the past 15 years.
Webb Audio Visual has two primary target audiences. On the equipment side of the company their audience is businesses that are building out new office space or upgrading their current audio-visual systems. They help design, integrate and install their audio-visual needs for conference and meeting rooms. On the event end, the market is companies needing help with events, galas, conferences and conventions ranging from a one night event to a multi-day extravaganza. They work with businesses in Utah and nationwide and have created, produced and managed some of the largest events in the country.
In the last 60 years they have grown from a local audiovisual company to a regional and international event producer who has produced meetings and events in China, Europe, Latin America, and for numerous U.S. Fortune 500 companies. Customers now come to Webb not only for audio visual needs but also for conference production, product launches, tradeshows, road shows, sales meetings, customer events and more. Webb Audio Visual, for the second straight year, has been named one of the top 50 event production companies in the U.S.
The company believes that trust powers every business transaction. ThWebb-Audio-Nuskiney feel like they’re good stewards of their client’s money, whether they’re a small business or a large corporation. Steve Webb stated, “We’re not out to take every last cent from our customers. Our job is to think about how best to fulfill their needs then work hard to do right by them.”
The company believes in keeping Utahans employed. They currently have more than 65 employees and use many more temporary and freelance workers around the valley. They have never laid off an employee due to economic circumstances, including during the 2008 recession, and they’re proud of this accomplishment.
The company still has a plaque hung by George Webb with a quote from Marshall Field, the Chicago retailer giant, which states, “Goodwill is the only asset that competition can’t undersell or destroy.” Webb Audio Visual still lives by this philosophy in their business practices. Scott Webb further states, “Our Company isn’t a faceless corporate abstraction. This is a family business that we run with integrity. We have to. Our name is on it.”
